Hoyo Azul, the DR's signature cenote

Hoyo Azul is the DR's most-photographed cenote — a 30-meter-deep limestone sinkhole at the base of a 75-meter cliff, filled with vivid turquoise water. It sits inside Scape Park in Cap Cana (15 min south of Punta Cana resorts), making it the easiest cenote day-trip in the country. Pair with the park's zip lines and cave tours for a full half-day visit.

Best for

  • Couples and adventure travelers
  • Day-trip from Punta Cana AI resorts
  • Families with kids 8+ (the descent has 200+ steps)

Why stay here

  • Closest cenote experience to Punta Cana resorts — 15 min vs 90+ min for any alternative.
  • Inside Scape Park — pair with zip lines, caves and Taino petroglyphs for a full day.
  • Vivid turquoise water year-round — among the most photographed cenotes in the Caribbean.

The Hoyo Azul experience

Wooden boardwalks descend 75 meters from cliff edge to cenote pool. Swimming is allowed (life jackets required, included), water is 18–20°C year-round. Visit takes 90 min including the descent and 30 min in the pool. Pair with Scape Park's other attractions — Iguabonita Cave (limestone caves with Taino petroglyphs), Power Fan (60m freefall), zip lines (12 platforms over the jungle).

Half-day or full-day

Half-day (4 hours): Hoyo Azul + one cave tour. Full-day (8 hours): Hoyo Azul + caves + zip lines + Power Fan + lunch. Most travelers do half-day — full-day is for adventure-focused groups. Pickup from Punta Cana hotels at 8 AM or 1 PM.
Hoyo Azul is the DR's most accessible cenote — closer to Punta Cana resorts than the famous Mexican cenotes are to Cancún.

Practical notes

Reef-safe sunscreen mandatory (the water feeds protected aquifers). Bring water shoes (the descent has wet steps). Camera-friendly — but no flash. Most Punta Cana resorts include Scape Park access in concierge packages.

What's nearby

Getting around

Most resorts include Scape Park transfers. Independent: taxi from Punta Cana $25–35 each way. Entrance to Hoyo Azul: $89 USD per person (includes life jacket and locker). Full Scape Park combo: $129–179.

When to visit

Year-round attraction. Best 10 AM–2 PM for direct sunlight on the water (peak turquoise color). Avoid weekends — crowds peak with cruise-ship day-trippers from PortMiami/Port Everglades.

Frequently asked questions

Can I swim in the cenote?

+

Yes — life jackets required and included with entry. Water is 18–20°C year-round, refreshing after the descent.

How deep is Hoyo Azul?

+

30 meters at its center. The cliff above rises another 75 meters. The pool is opaque turquoise due to mineral content — no visibility below the surface.

Is it kid-friendly?

+

Yes for kids 8+ who can manage 200+ steps. Younger kids can be carried but the wet descent is tricky. Strollers don't work.

Are the zip lines worth it?

+

Yes if you have the half-day — 12 platforms over the jungle, professional rigging, good safety record. Add-on $40–60.
