What to see
Dining and the wider Casa de Campo
“Half a day at Altos de Chavón is the DR's strongest cultural counterweight to a week of resort pool decks.”

Altos de Chavón is a meticulously detailed replica of a 16th-century Mediterranean village, built in the 1970s on a cliff above the Chavón River at the Casa de Campo resort in La Romana. It holds a 5,000-seat amphitheater (Frank Sinatra inaugurated it in 1982), art galleries, restaurants and a small archaeology museum. Half-day visit, well worth the drive from Punta Cana or Bayahibe.
Where to stay
Our La Romana base — Catalonia Royal La Romana — sits 10 min from Altos de Chavón.
