Hoyo Azul Cenote Explorer Guide 2026

Hoyo Azul

A neon-blue hidden oasis in Cap Cana — everything you need to know to visit the Dominican Republic's most breathtaking natural sinkhole.

← All guides

Tucked away at the base of a 75-meter towering limestone cliff in Cap Cana's Scape Park, Hoyo Azul (the Blue Hole) is one of the most stunning geological wonders of the Caribbean. This natural cenote sinkhole is filled with pristine, cool, fresh spring water that naturally filters through the limestone bedrock, giving it a luminous, neon-blue color that looks almost surreal.

Reaching Hoyo Azul involves a scenic walk through a lush tropical rainforest, crossing a suspension bridge, and descending wooden stairs built along the cliffside. It is a refreshing, cooling escape from the hot coastal beaches of Punta Cana and an adventure that combines geology, flora, and refreshing swimming.

This guide outlines the best times to visit to capture the best light, what to expect on the trail, Scape Park admission details, and tips for making the most of your adventure.

Insider tips

  • Arrive early. Scape Park opens at 9:00 AM; heading straight to Hoyo Azul first guarantees you can swim and take photos before the tourist buses arrive.
  • The best sunlight for photography is between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM, when the sun is directly overhead and illuminates the neon-blue color of the water.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes or sneakers for the hike. Sandals or flip-flops can be slippery on the wet wooden stairs.
  • Bring water-shoes for inside the cenote if you want extra grip on the submerged stairs.
  • Locker rentals are available at the main entrance. You cannot bring large backpacks or loose items onto the cenote platform for safety reasons.
