Zona Colonial Santo Domingo — visit guide

Zona Colonial — the DR's cultural anchor

Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial is the oldest continuously inhabited European-settled city in the Americas — founded 1496, four years after Columbus's first voyage. The 5-block UNESCO World Heritage centre holds the first cathedral (Catedral Primada de América, 1540), the first paved street (Calle Las Damas), the first hospital, and Diego Columbus's palace (Alcázar de Colón). Easy half-day walking tour, well worth a 2-night Santo Domingo extension to any DR resort week.

Where to stay

Our Dominican Republic hotels for this trip

Embassy Suites by Hilton Santo Domingo — our urban pick for the Zona Colonial extension.

Best for

  • Cultural travelers
  • Couples extending a DR resort week
  • First-time visitors to the Caribbean wanting depth

Why stay here

  • UNESCO World Heritage site — the oldest continuously inhabited European city in the Americas.
  • Compact 5-block historic centre — fully walkable in 3 hours.
  • Strong restaurant and bar scene — genuine cultural counterweight to resort weeks.

The walking-tour spine

Start at Parque Colón (the central plaza) with the Catedral Primada de América on one side. Walk Calle El Conde (the pedestrian shopping street) east to Plaza España — bordered by the Alcázar de Colón palace and a row of cafés. Walk south down Calle Las Damas (the first paved street in the Americas, 1502) past colonial mansions to the Fortaleza Ozama. Total: 3 hours including stops.

Restaurants on the walk

Lunch at Pat'e Palo Brasserie on Plaza España (oldest continuously operating restaurant in the Americas, 1505 building). Dinner at Mesón D'Bari (Dominican, three blocks from Parque Colón). Coffee at Café Bellini on Calle El Conde.
Zona Colonial is the cultural counterweight that resort-only DR travelers miss — and it's only 2 hours from Punta Cana.

Practical visit

Most travelers add 2 nights to a Punta Cana resort week. Drive Punta Cana → Santo Domingo: 2 hours via Autovía del Coral toll road. Stay at Embassy Suites by Hilton (5 min from Zona Colonial). Guided walking tours: $25–40 per person, English available.

What's nearby

Getting around

Walking inside Zona Colonial. From Punta Cana: 2 hr drive or 25 min flight PUJ → SDQ. From Embassy Suites: 5 min taxi to Parque Colón.

When to visit

Year-round attraction. Best morning (9 AM–12 PM) — cooler, fewer cruise-ship day-trippers. Avoid 1–3 PM in summer (peak heat).
