Quick answers
- How far ahead must I book?
- Two to three months for the Nasrid Palaces. This is not a queue you can talk your way into — entry is by named ticket and half-hour slot.
- How long do you need?
- Three hours minimum for palaces, Generalife and Alcazaba. Half a day if you want to walk it properly.
- Can you get in without a ticket?
- No. The Nasrid Palaces admit a fixed number per slot and ID is checked against the booking name.
- Is it doable from the coast?
- Yes — 1h30 by car from Málaga or Nerja, making it a realistic day trip from a Costa del Sol base.

Three sites, one ticket
The Alhambra is not a single building. The Alcazaba is the military fort at the western tip, the Nasrid Palaces are the reason everyone comes, and the Generalife is the summer palace and gardens up the hill. A general ticket covers all three, but only the Nasrid Palaces carry a fixed entry time.
Miss that half-hour slot and you lose the palaces entirely — the rest of the ticket still works. Plan the day backwards from it.
Why the booking pressure is real
Daily capacity for the Nasrid Palaces is capped and demand runs well past it for most of the year. Tickets are named and ID is checked, which kills the resale market that usually rescues late bookers elsewhere.
If you have left it late, the guided-tour operators hold separate allocations and often have space when the official site shows none. You will pay more for it.
Doing it from a beach base
Granada is 1h30 from Málaga by car and about the same from Nerja, which makes the Alhambra one of the few genuinely world-class monuments you can visit on a beach holiday without moving hotels.
Leave by 7am for a morning palace slot. The mountain road is fine but not fast, and the Alhambra's own car park fills early.
Where to stay
Staying in Granada itself — ideally in the Albaicín, across the valley — gets you the evening view of the palace lit against the Sierra Nevada, which the day-trippers miss entirely.
For a coastal base within range, see the Costa del Sol area guide, or browse member rates on Andalusian hotels.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I miss my Nasrid Palaces slot?
You forfeit the palaces. The Alcazaba, Generalife and gardens remain valid on the same ticket for the rest of the day.
Do I need my passport?
Bring the photo ID used to book. Names are checked at the Nasrid Palaces entrance and mismatches are refused.
Is the Alhambra worth it in one day from Málaga?
Yes, if you book a morning slot and accept a long day. Leaving at 7am gets you back to the coast by early evening.
When is it quietest?
November to February, excluding Christmas. The gardens are less impressive but the palaces are the same and tickets are available days rather than months ahead.
